Marjorie Evans Ayers

Mrs. Marjorie Evans Ayers, 88, of Gainesville, Florida, died on Thursday, March 16, 2023, at UF Health Shands Hospital in Gainesville, Florida. Mrs. Ayers was born Friday, February 22, 1935 in Gainesville, Florida to late Mr. John Thad Evans and the late Mrs. Precious Maria Mobley Evans. She attended Alachua County Public Schools, graduating from Lincoln High School in 1952. Mrs. Ayers then matriculated to Florida A&M University, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in 1956, she later earned a Master of Education degree from the University of Florida in 1980. Mrs. Ayers was a career long dedicated and highly respected educator. In 1955, Mrs. Ayers privileged the late Colonel George W. Ayers, Jr. by becoming his wife and she remained his wife for 63 years until becoming his widow in 2018. Born unto this union are four lovely and admirable children: Dwayne, Damian, Marva, and Donald. Mrs. Ayers had an exciting sense of humor and an open mind for culture. She enjoyed being a practical jokester, experiencing diverse foods, dancing, and listening to and singing Jazz music. She was a dedicated member of St. Patrick Church, actively serving the Home and School Organization. Mrs. Ayers was also an active altruistic giving countless hours of dedication service to the following organizations: Delta Sigma Theta, Sorority, The Links, Inc. (Platinum Member), American Association of University Women, The Visionaires Civil Club, United Nations Association of the USA, Florida A&M University Alumni Association, and Florida Retired Educators Association (District Volunteer). In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by: her maternal grandmother, Lelia Mobley Strong; sister, Lelia Ann Evans; and, brothers, John R. Evans and Ernest W. Clarke. She leaves to carry on her legacy: a daughter, Marva Ayers; three sons, Dwayne, Damian, and Donald Ayers, seven grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. A Funeral service will be at 2:00 PM on Sunday, March 26, 2023 at St. Patrick Church located at 500 NE 16th Ave, Gainesville, Florida 32601. Interment with her husband George, will be at 1:30pm on Monday, March 27, 2023 at the U.S. National Cemetery in Jacksonville, at 4083 Lannie Rd. Jacksonville, FL 32218. The Cortege for the funeral service on Sunday will form at 1:15pm at 1224 SE 12th Ave. Gainesville, FL; and the Cortege for the burial will form at the same address on Monday at 11:15am. There will be a public viewing of Mrs. Ayers at Chestnut Memorial Chapel, 18 NW 8th Ave., Gainesville, Florida from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM on Saturday, March 25, 2023; Floral arrangements may be ordered via the link on this webpage or a call to your preferred florist for delivery no later than 5pm, Saturday, March 25, 2023.
