Mr. Michael A. Hicks

Mr. Michael A. Hicks, 68, passed away on November 17, 2023 at the Malcolm Randall Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center. Mr. Hicks was born November 10, 1955 in Gainesville, Florida to Freddie and Velma Hicks. He attended Eastside High School graduating with the Class of 1973. In 1979, he joined the United States Navy where he received several medals and awards including the Good Conduct Medal, Navy Unit Commendation, Navy Expeditionary Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Sea Service Deployment Ribbon, and two Gold Wreath Awards. During his service to our country, Mr. Hicks served as Work Center Supervisor and a member of the Navy Recruiting Orientation Unit. He received his honorable discharge in February, 1985. Years later, in 2000, he was joined in holy matrimony to Brenda Parker, a love that lasted until his demise. He enjoyed archery, fishing, culinary arts and reading. He was employed in Food Service with Alachua County Public Schools. He leaves to mourn and forever cherish his everlasting memory; his wife of twenty-three years, Brenda Hicks of Gainesville, FL; sons, Michael Hicks, Jr. and Mark Hicks, both US Navy; step-son, Eugene White of Jacksonville, FL; two step-daughters, Maria Goston and ScheRhonda Lewis (Eric); god-daughter, Naytaja Williams; two brothers, Mark Antonio Hicks and Michael Henderson; niece, Ashley Marlayna Hicks, all of Gainesville, FL; uncles, James Porcher (Jettie) of San Antonio, TX and Anthony Porcher (Maggie) of Miami, FL; brother-in-law, George Parker, Jr.; sister-in-law, Omega Wilcox, both of Nashville, TN; special cousins, Rodney Cooper and Demetrius Atkins; grandchildren, Skylar and Zaden Lewis; other relatives and caring friends. Visitation for Mr. Hicks will be Tuesday, November 28, 2023 from 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM at Chestnut Memorial Chapel, 18 NW 8th Avenue, Gainesville, FL 32601. Funeral Services will be held on Wednesday, November 29, 2023 at 10:00 AM at Mt. Moriah Baptist Church, 718 SE 11th Street, Gainesville, FL 32641, Rev. Freemon N. Gallmon, Pastor. Interment will follow immediately in Jacksonville National Cemetery, 4083 Lannie Road, Jacksonville, FL 32218 at 1:00 PM.
