Honoring Traditions, Uplifting Legacies

A trusted Black-owned funeral home serving Gainesville families with dignity and compassion.

At Chestnut Funeral Home, we proudly stand as a Black-owned funeral home in Gainesville, FL, with a legacy rooted in dignity, compassion, and community service. For many years, we have had the honor of serving families in Gainesville, Alachua County, and the North Central Florida region—offering comfort, care, and guidance during life’s most challenging moments.

Our commitment to excellence and cultural sensitivity makes us one of the most trusted Black funeral homes in Florida. We understand the deep traditions and values within the Black community and are here to ensure every farewell reflects the beauty, love, and strength of the lives we celebrate.

A Century of Service and Community

Our story began in 1914 when Mr. Matthew E. Hughes, also known as “Boisey,” and Mr. Charles S. Chestnut, Sr. opened Hughes and Chestnut Funeral Home right here in Gainesville, Florida. This bold move made history—not only in our town but across the state. They later expanded operations to Ocala, Florida and were among the founding members of the Florida Mortician Association, a pioneering organization dedicated to supporting Black morticians throughout the state.

Chestnut Funeral Home was officially licensed in 1959, though our roots in funeral service had already been growing strong for decades. Mr. Chestnut, Sr., a visionary and leader, was one of the first licensed Black embalmers in Florida, earning his license in 1928. His values of professionalism, integrity, and public service still guide everything we do today.

More Than a Funeral Home — A Family Legacy

As a family-owned and Black-owned funeral home, we carry forward the values and vision of our founders. We are more than service providers; we are caregivers, confidants, and community members. Our history is interwoven with Gainesville’s own, and we remain deeply committed to preserving that connection.

We provide comprehensive funeral and memorial services that honor both tradition and personal wishes. Whether you are planning ahead or facing a recent loss, our team is here to walk with you every step of the way—with compassion and cultural understanding that only comes from generations of experience.
